American Diabetes Association Camps Brings the Fun to Campers in 2020

The American Diabetes Association Imagine Camp invites area children living with diabetes to join in a virtual camping experience for 2020.  (Img: American Diabetes Association)

With health and safety still a concern this summer, especially for those who are considered most vulnerable, many activities and events have been canceled. It is a disappointment, certainly, for the many children who planned to attend camp with their friends this year.

Yet, for the camps run by the American Diabetes Association, the FUN has not been canceled. Campers are invited to attend camp virtually this year. Called the ADA Imagine Camp, the organization plans to bring the magic of camp to all campers living with Type 1 diabetes right where they are! In our area, the camp will run from August 3 to 7.

The camp is free to all children, ages 5 to 17 living with diabetes. The program blends in-home activities and a virtual setting that will expand the reach and benefits of a diabetes camp experience to even more children. Each year the in-person camps reach about 15,000 children across the U.S. With the virtual format, however, the organization can reach many more.

In our area, the Greater Cincinnati ADA serves about 160 children through an in-person camp experience that has been hosted by Camp Korelitz since 1972. Organizers say they hope the online camp will expand the reach to children living with diabetes from all over Ohio and the tristate area.
