Step Inside the Greenwich House Gallery

Article and Photos By Mary Casey-Sturk

Greenwich House Gallery offers a wonderful variety of art at its home in historic O’Bryonville.  Maybe you’ve noticed the small white building sitting catty-corner along Madison Road; next to it, a grander building with large windows perfect for peeking into and dreaming. Maybe you’ve gone in and looked at the wide and vibrant selection of art from Cincinnati-area artists and beyond. Maybe you haven’t, but you should.

For over a decade the Gallery has been providing not only a place for artists to showcase their work, but also a place where an artist can stop in and find inspiration. Founded by Peggy Marquette (who retired in 2017) and now owned by art lover Ramesh Malhotra, paintings, sculptures and more are presented for sale, or for a visitor to stop in an and enjoy. That’s right, even if you are not planning to shop, you are invited to come in and browse - more on that later.

Gallery room after gallery room welcomes you, with high ceilings, warm hardwood floors and walls flanked with landscapes, still lifes and portraits. Alongside are sculptures, turned wood pieces and fanciful mobiles.

Not only can you explore the expansive galleries (they are open six days a week), the Gallery is also an event center, available to rent, and they’ve hosted numerous events including meetings, fundraisers and weddings.

The Gallery presents several special exhibitions annually, giving audiences the chance to discover new artists and enjoy favorites. This spring, their exhibition of Impressionist works (entitled Impress Me), was an open gallery show featuring large statement pieces and proved very popular.
Co-directors Jade Ausdenmoore and Anna Mair shared their love of the Gallery and art.

New co-directors Anna Maier and Jade Ausdenmoore welcome you to Greenwich House Gallery.
Are your artists primarily local? Ausdenmoore replies, “we have many local artists, we also have national and international artists as well.” Mair notes, “I’d say about 50% of the artists are local.”  Some are from as far as Las Vegas, Phoenix, New York and Europe.

Any suggestions for those seeking to invest in art? Audenmoore suggests, “find a dealer that you trust and forge a lasting relationship. Buy what you enjoy and like. And when you have a dealer you like, let them know what you are looking for.”

“We’re like matchmakers,” Mair adds with a laugh. “We match what’s on our walls to a client or find what the client is looking for.” Their clients are both individuals and interior decorators who work with clients including homeowners and corporations.

“We try to keep a large variety of both price points and style, everything from realism to abstracts to sculpture, priced from $200 to $27,000 so there is a variety to select from” shares Mair, adding, “We work for the artists - we love our artists.”

For those who might be intimated by art and don’t want to walk into a gallery, what you would suggest they do if they walk by your Gallery? “Our best days are when someone has the energy to bring in a child and show them art.  We love to see people come in just to enjoy (the art), and we welcome artists to come in and find inspiration.” “All are welcome to come inside and look,” states Mair.

Where do you enjoy seeing art (outside of the Greenwich House Gallery)? Audenmoore shares, “They (her family) love to travel and make a point to visit arts districts in their travels, to see local museums and galleries.”  Mair, an artist, likes to visit the Pendleton Art Center in Cincinnati [several artists from Pendleton are represented at the Gallery] because it’s nice to see so many artists in one place, and I especially enjoy the Final Fridays there.” Mair once had a studio at Pendleton herself.

Greenwich House Gallery has some 50 + artists they work with, many with pieces on display and for sale. For artists wishing to sell their work at the Gallery, they are invited to reach out and share their work for consideration.

For those seeking a relaxing break, a little inspiration or investing in a piece that will bring a smile for years, step inside.

Follow them on facebook or visit their website for information on artists, openings and exhibitions.
