Cowboys Golfers to State

By Victory Lee

“10-12!” This was the slogan of the Wyoming High School Golf Team for the season of 2018. The slogan “10-12” was a reminder for all golfers for their final goal to reach the Ohio State Championship on October 12-13. This goal came true when both the boys and girls golf team advanced to the state tournament to make Wyoming High School the only Division II school statewide to have both teams qualify to the state (OHSAA).

Both teams had a great performance throughout the season. The Boys Varsity won the title of the 2018 Cincinnati Hills League Champions after their win over Finneytown at Glenview Golf Course, with the final team score of 160-236. The Girls Varsity won the CCDS Invitational at Fairfield Greens South Trace with the team score of 362. The boys and girl’s junior varsity teams also had a meaningful season with many new players who decided to join the team and share the team spirit. Freshmen golfer Izzy Vegh shared, “It was my first year playing, and it was so much fun! The team was really supportive. I definitely want to keep playing. And I’m really glad I decided to try it!”

The journey to the state tournament began at the sectional tournament. The girls team repeated the Division II Sectional champion title at Hamilton Elks Golf Course on September 27. The girls had a team total of 385, which was 26 shots better than the winning score of last year. The girls, then, won the champion title at the District tournament at Pipestone on October 3 with a yet another better score of 366 to defeat the runner-up, National Trail, by 10 strokes. The boys team placed third for the team qualification and had top scorers at the district tournament. Senior Dylan Stevens shot a 75 to finish third overall, and junior Thomas Stickney shot a 78 to finish tenth.

With the temperature dropping almost to the forties in the mornings, the golfers had to fight the cold and play with multiple layers of clothes. The girls finished fourth overall among the Division II teams, with the record team score of 358 and 353 for their two rounds at the OSU Gray course. The boys finished eighth overall, and Senior Dylan Stevens shot an 80 and a 79, to place himself within the top ten scorers out of the 72 competitors of the Division II tournament.

The experience of the state tournament was an impressive achievement for all golfers in the Wyoming golf team. Though the teams now lose the graduating seniors for the next season, they are looking forward to yet another great season with the growing golfers. Coach Sheehan of the girls team says, “I am both proud and happy for all the golfers and for the success they had this season. We will miss our seniors, but next season could be very exciting.” The golfers thank all the community members for their support for the team and Wyoming Golf Course for allowing a comfortable environment for the golfers to practice. With all the support, the golfers look to repeat their amazing experience at state.
