Wyoming Senior Overcomes Paralysis with Help of Local JCC

Submitted by Rob Dietrich
Wyoming residents Lynn and Rich Moschel had been married for 45 years when disaster struck. In 2013, one week before their granddaughter’s bat mitzvah, Lynn was cleaning their home to prepare for the celebration when she suddenly lost balance and fell headfirst and backward down a flight of stairs. She was taken to intensive care at University Hospital, where her doctors informed her that she had broken her neck and was now a quadriplegic- paralyzed from the neck down. She spent four months in treatment at the Shepherd Center spinal cord and brain injury rehabilitation facility in Atlanta, Georgia. Lynn healed, but was left depending on a wheelchair to get around.

Lynn Moschel overcame paralysis with the help of her husband Rich and local fitness classes.

As part of her rehabilitation, Lynn’s physical therapist at the Shepherd Center recommended she take Pilates for exercise and suggested the Mayerson JCC in Cincinnati as a location to begin this therapy. Rich and Lynn became members right away.

Today, five years later, Rich and Lynn continue to be members of the JCC. Lynn takes twice weekly Pilates and personal training sessions that JCC instructors have optimized with help from Shepherd Center physical therapists to fit her progress. Rich has never missed a single appointment with Lynn. He accompanies her during every visit, where they even grab lunch in between Lynn’s morning Pilates class and afternoon personal training and rowing exercise. Lynn has progressed from a wheelchair to a walker, then from the walker to crutches.

With the continued support of her husband and specialized therapy from the JCC, Rich and Lynn continue to live a full and active life.
