Senior named Coca-Cola Scholar 

Summit Country Day School senior Joseph Delamerced of Hyde Park has been named a Coca-Cola Scholar by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation.

Coca-Cola sponsors one of the most competitive achievement-based scholarship programs awarded to high school seniors who must demonstrate exceptional leadership, service and academics. Joseph, who will attend Brown University this fall, is one of 150 students who received a $20,000 scholarship this year from a pool of more than 100,000 applicants nationwide.   

He and other Coca-Cola Scholars were honored at a banquet in Atlanta after participating in a four-day convention that featured leadership training programs, personal development seminars and a community service project. 

Joseph has been passionate about the different service projects in which he has been involved. He is a co-founder of KidsForChess and has been teaching chess to inner-city students. He is a U.S. Chess Federation National Scholastic chess champion and has been playing since he was 5 years old. He also founded EtU Latin, an educational blog and teaching program focused on bringing Latin and Greek Mythology through art and theater to middle school students. He received a First Place Service Award from the National Junior Classical League in 2017. In addition, he has served at The David and Rebecca Barron’s Men’s Shelter Free Clinic in Over-the-Rhine.

Joseph is a lifer at The Summit and a member of the Student Senate, past president of the award-winning Latin Club and recent host of the Farrell Ackley Talent Show. He is the immediate past president of the Ohio Junior Classical League and was invited to be a guest speaker at the Massachusetts Junior Classical League State Convention. He has organized Make-A-Difference Day service projects in all three regions of the state, coded and designed an award-winning website and helped bring together more than 30 chapters for a state convention. 

He is a two-time overall individual state champion in the Ohio Junior Classical League State Convention. In addition, he has had two perfect scores in the National Latin Exam along with four gold medals. He is a member of the Eta Sigma Phi Fraternity, a college-level group uniting scholars of the Classics. He is also a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians.

Joseph is a National Merit Finalist and was named an AP Scholar with Distinction in his junior year. He is enrolled in the Science Research Institute, a college preparatory program offered only at The Summit. Through the institute, he had an internship this past summer in the Rothenberg Lab at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Medical Center in the Allergy & Immunology Department where he studied eosinophilic esophagitis. He was also selected to participate in TAP MD, a program which introduces talented students to potential medical careers.

Joseph has been accepted to the Brown University Program in Liberal Medical Education, which is an eight-year bachelor’s and medical degree program. He also was accepted into undergraduate programs at Duke University, University of Michigan, University of Notre Dame, University of Pennsylvania, Rice University, Stanford University and University of Cincinnati as well as the combined bachelor’s and medical degree programs at Case Western Reserve University and the University of Pittsburgh. He was offered close to $500,000 in merit scholarships.
