Wyoming High School senior Paige Barnes was awarded First Runner-Up in the State of Ohio’s Distinguished Young Women of American Competition (formerly Ohio Junior Miss). “I left for Mt. Vernon in the evening on Wednesday, February 21 and stayed there until Sunday, February 26. I stayed with Stefanie and Dave Benson, my host family, with another girl who eventually became this year's winner,” Paige recalled.

There were five categories that ultimately determined the winner: scholastic, talent, self-expression, interview, and fitness. “Self-expression is 20-30 seconds of public speaking on a given topic.” Paige explained, “And fitness was this Zumba-esque routine.” There were two girls from each of the five categories awarded with the top score, and Paige won the self-expression category and interview category. “My self-expression topic was ‘balance’. I think what set me apart from the other girls was when I spoke, I stood on one leg for the full 30 seconds. I compared my lessons in ballet to balancing my life.”
Paige’s First Runner-Up Award earned valuable money for her college pursuits next year. “I won $500 for the interview, $400 for self-expression, and $2000 as First Runner Up. Overall, I am coming home with $2,900 to put towards college as I please.”
Congratulations to Paige and her parents!
