Live Free Like Michelle

On August 1, Michelle Chalk passed away in a tragic accident when a tree fell on her in her friend’s back yard in Fort Thomas. The 15-year old, soon-to-be Highlands freshmen was a loved and valuable member of the community.

The news of her death has affected the community greatly, but no more than her parents, Keith and Patty.

"It is obvious to me that Michelle's death was a community experience,” said Keith Chalk.

"When Patty was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2014, we created a Facebook group, 'Pray for Patty', which we were very open with everyone about our experience.  We made a conscious decision that openness was better than seclusion.  We saw that others could benefit from our experiences. We trusted in the love and generosity of others despite the risk of being transparent.

I'm making the same decision with Michelle's death."

Highlands Middle School remembered Michelle earlier this year with a balloon launch and a “high-five Friday” in her honor.
